AGAIN.. FMIPA Students Promote the name of Tadulako University

All elements of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNTAD can be proud of the victory achieved by the Tadulako University team at the Pertamina Science Olympiad 2016 Asean Regional Level Science Project Category, because two of the team members are outstanding students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. At the event that has been held since June 4 October 2016, Tadulako University is represented by three students, namely, Faris Muhammad Gazali (Biology students UNTAD FMIPA), Ryan Hankey Ranonto (Physics student UNTAD FMIPA), And Yogi Adam P. Ladjatang (students of the UNTAD Faculty of Agriculture) dengan judul Proyek “Biohydrogen Production By Utilizing Indigenous Hydrogen Producing Thermophiles Isilated From Bora Village Hotsring, Central Sulawesi”.

Pertamina Science Olympiad is a Corporate Social Responsibility program (CSR) education field, where in this event there are two categories, namely the national level theory competition category and the second category of science projects at the Asean level. In the first category there are four fields, namely the field of Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and Chemistry where one of the participants is a student of FMIPA UNTAD, Mira Novrianti who made it to the finalist round in Chemistry.

As for the category of Asean Regional Science Project available 260 tim. A science project is a competency in initiating an idea which is formed in a research project and is fully funded by Pertamina during 1 month. The stages of selection in this competency, namely, proposal selection (for areas outside Jabodetabek this is done via video conference) where at this stage 45 the team is selected to the next stage. The second stage is the interview test, at this stage leaves 18 great finalist. The next stage is the stage of the competition which is held at Hotel Bumi Wiyarta Depok where at this stage several stages of assessment are carried out, namely i, 20% exhibition and 80% presentations and papers. Meanwhile, the judges for this competition came from several agencies such as, University of Indonesia, PT. Pertamina, dan National University of Singapore.

This is the first time that Tadulako University has won the title 1 in the Pertamina OSN competency event so this is what makes Faris Muhammad Gazali as the team leader very grateful and did not expect to be the winner of the competition.. Faris admitted that initially he did not expect to become a winner because their aim to follow this competency was only to give the best for Tadulako University. "We are very grateful for this victory. At first we didn't think we could be the winner even though we only wanted to give our best because if we compare it to other universities, they have sophisticated tools and also amazing products. We were insecure about it until finally there was one of our mentors who gave us encouragement so that we were confident again. We can't do anything, I only intend to give the best because it is Allah who determines it, ”said Faris.

Faris added that the judges were very responsive about their initial ideas and ideas during the question and answer session. "For excellence being a champion is the secret of the jury, But we see that the jury is very responsive to our original idea, which is how we can produce hydrogen at a low price and have tremendous benefits in the future.. Our title, namely the production of hydrogen from thermophilic bacteria isolated from hot springs in the village of Bora, Central Sulawesi. So we raised the potential of our region, that is, where there are thermophilic bacteria from hot springs and we are trying to isolate bacteria which are very beneficial and can produce hydrogen optimally, "he said..

As team leader, Faris hopes that the Government and Pertamina will provide cooperation and facilities so that their hydrogen products can be utilized by the Indonesian people. "In this case we hope, so that our products can be used by the people of Indonesia because we are already offering a hydrogen product at a low price while abroad the price is still expensive. We also hope that our products are not used by foreigners, we hope our products can be used by the Indonesian people themselves. In the future we want to create a hydrogen technology and cooperate with the Government and Pertamina to make this happen "

Not forgetting, Faris expressed his gratitude for the support and prayers that led UNTAD TEAM to win. "I am very grateful to those who have supported, thanks to the Chancellor , Dean, Deputy Dean, all lecturers, and colleagues who have supported , pray, and assisting the research process, "concluded Faris.

As Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNTAD, Dr. Rusydi H, M.Si also gave appreciation and motivation for students to be able to develop their achievements. "We really appreciate students who excel at the ASEAN regional level because this is a very tight competition and they have proven that Tadulako University is able to compete with well-known universities in Indonesia.. We will also give appreciation to all students who excel by giving reword to them and to maintain this achievement we will foster students through their enthusiasm and further coaching through the faculty so that the generation of achievers does not stop.. We hope that all Tadulako University students will be able to compete through achievement because currently science is very open and easily accessible via the internet so there is no reason for achievement.” said the Dean of FMIPA UNTAD with great pride.
